Prom Flower Memories

An intriguing article from delawareonline.com about prom flowers from forty years ago being found in a Christina River Watershed Cleanup touches on the memories flowers evoke.

The delicate flower box and perfectly dried flowers "obviously were special to the girl who saved them," said Jennings, who took them to a post-cleanup brunch.

"Everyone who opened the box was amazed," said planning committee member Nancy Parker, one of Artesian Water's representatives in the annual project.

The lid of the six-sided box bears a note in blue ballpoint pen, written in loopy, feminine hand:

"Given by: Truman E. Clothier on: May 19, 1967 (Senior Prom) (He gave me his butineer [sic] after he brought me home from the After Prom Party!)"

Inside is a corsage of shriveled flowers -- apparently carnations around a central flower, possibly an orchid -- in a cushion of powder-blue nylon net. Its blue lace streamers, a sprig of baby's breath, lace backing and cloth leaves look fresh. Nestled in the corsage is a tiny silver heart with rhinestones -- still shiny bright.

We discussed prom flowers planning in an earlier post and florists across the US are gearing up to make memories for this year's prom-goers.

I preserved my very first dance corsage - white carnations tipped in royal blue and dusted heavily in silver glitter. In those days, girls wore their flowers pinned on their dresses at the bodice - and they sure did get smashed during slow dances. ;-)

Today's wrist corsages, finger corsages, floral necklaces and flower tattoos are so much more fashionable and more practical to wear.

Do you have a favorite prom flower memory?

I remember my first prom flowers - pale lavendar roses in a wristlet, very traditional and quite typical. I saved it for so long, but during the many moves of my early adulthood, practicality won over sentimentality and I eventually tossed it. But I always remember the night, and how beautiful I felt - my first real dressy dress, feminine flowers and long hair french braided with fresh flowers.

I wonder if the my date remembers picking out my flowers as much as I remember being so touched by his choice?

My first prom flowers were quite memorable especially since I was almost too afraid to even talk to my date. I was just a "dorky" freshman and he was a senior basketball player. To my surprise, he showed up at my door with the most perfect corsage ever. White roses, with ribbon and rhinestones to match my dress. Even some delphinium florets were tossed in for good measure.

I still have that dried up corsage in a shoebox in the back of my closet...and every time I see it, I still smile.

Memories and emotions....gotta love our biz!!
