BOSS's Blog - a Florist's Rant

Broken Model

Rate this Entry
It still amazes me that some of the most vocal critics of the “broken model” only want to have principals held by others. This one really got me:
Quote from Ken Royer in this months Florists' Review:
"Many florists feel they need the volume provided by incoming wire orders and usually don't realize those orders are mostly unprofitable. Instead of limiting the number of unprofitable incoming orders, florists raised prices across the board to offset them. Once the rebate program was established, no one could find a way to discontinue it and stop or reverse its profound effect"

Gee, isn’t that the same guy who has been playing the wire services against each other for years to try to get the best ccard/rebate deal possible? Isn’t he the guy who sold out to Gerald Stevens and sold a ton of other shops down the river?

The quote you cite is probably as factual as any I have read regarding what it relates too, ( I would disagree somewhat on the term "mostly unprofitable" I would suggest using less profitable) however I am a little confused though as to what "amazes you".

The examples you use in pointing out Ken Royers actions seem to be those of a fairly astute business person, negotiating for lower rates on essential services and selling a business at a profit. Are these not something that everyone on this board strive for (or at least should)?
